Our Top Tips for Moving House

There’s no doubt about it, whilst moving into your new home is an incredibly exciting time, it can also be challenging.   It may take a few weeks to organise your move, plan logistics, figure out timings, decide where furniture should go, and get used to your new home.

So how can you make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible?

We have made the ultimate moving checklist for you, to help guide you through the process…..

1. Start early

As soon as you know you’re planning to move, start the process of decluttering. By reducing the amount of packing early on, there will be less to unpack later, so it’s worth having a clear-out prior to the packing process.

2. Plan your removals

Be sure to get quotes from three removal companies.  It might be worth exploring the various options they offer.   Consider if it would be helpful for the removal company to do both the packing up in your old house, as well as the unpacking in your new home.   Whilst it will add cost to the removals, it could be worth its weight in gold and save you a lot of time.

3. Questions for sellers

Before moving in, write a list of questions for the people you’re buying from, so you have all the vital information you need. Questions to ask might include: the location of the gas and electric meters and stopcock, utility providers, bin collection day, if they are leaving appliances, do they have instruction manuals, etc.   Ingham Fox will help with this and take initial metre readings for you and provide a record of past readings.

4. Redirect your post

Royal Mail will redirect your post for a small charge for a set period of time. This is a great way to take away the worry of missing any letters or important documents.

5. Organised packing

Label your boxes, so you know which room they are destined for and briefly describe the contents.  This will help ensure the right boxes end up in the right place.

Top tip: Make sure you’ve packed a box of everyday essentials such as a kettle, tea and coffee, biscuits, mugs, a few plates and crockery. Then at least you can have a cup of tea or coffee whilst you are organising everything!

6. Children and moving

Children will probably already have chosen their new bedrooms ahead of moving in day.   To add to the excitement, think about helping them to create a special moving box containing all their favourite toys, comforters and so on.   This will hopefully help them settle into their new room quickly and easily.
